Man pleads guilty to neighbour's murder, also linked to cold case death

A man has confessed to killing his neighbour who disappeared from her home on May 11 2019.

Former music teacher Dianne Barrett, 59, was last seen buying flowers and was reported missing by neighbours two weeks later.

Bushland searches failed to find any sign of Ms Barrett, but months later her body was discovered 30km from her home in Medina, Perth.

Police charged neighbour Darren Chalmers, 53, with her murder and on August 26 2020,
 pleaded guilty.

He has also been linked to the cold case murder of Annette Steward, who was found strangled in her Geelong bedroom in 1992.

Victorian detectives want to bring Chalmers interstate to face charges over Ms Steward's death. But first, he will face sentencing in January 2021 for killing Ms Barrett.
