Stephane Murphey: Mystery remains in murder of New Mexican woman

Date: 6/8/2001
Location: , United States

Details

The murder of 37-year-old Stephane Murphy in April 1999 remains a baffling case for the Rio Rancho Police.

On the afternoon of April 15, 1999 Stephane worked out at Gold`s Gym in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. She then rented two movies at Blockbuster Video just before 5:30 p.m.Neighbors reported seeing Stephane pull her 1988 blue Chevrolet Sprint into her driveway that evening.

Later that night, a neighbour reported hearing a scream, then Led Zepplin music blaring uncharacteristically from Murphey`s home. Then nothing.

On April 18, 1999 Stephane was reported missing by friends. Police entered her home to do a welfare check and found that the home appeared to have been broken in to, burglarised and Stephane`s vehicle was also missing.

The next day Stephane`s body was found on the back-seat of her car, which was parked at an apartment complex in midtown Albuquerque.

**She had been strangled, sexually assaulted, her body partly wrapped in a bedsheet, a pale green nightgown pulled over her head, gray stretch pants ringed twice around her neck.**

Albuquerque and Rio Rancho police believe she was killed at her house, and her body was stuffed in her car and inexplicably driven to the apartment-complex parking lot.

Although no arrest has been made, police believe they will eventually get their man. Police have a DNA profile of the killer, obtained from a small smudge of semen.

A $25,000 reward for information has been offered by family, friends and Continental Airlines, where Stephane worked as an airhostess for 12 years.
